HOW TO PLAY

A fun way to play with numbers.

Variations in playing the game

Basic Rules

Number of players from 2 to 6.

Each player may use a pencil and paper for calculations.

Separate the target cards from the number cards.

Deal one target card to each player face up.

Deal two number cards in the centre face up.

Players are required to use the number cards in the centre, in any combination of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and bracketing to reach their target number.

Not all number cards in play need to be used but each card can be used only once.

If no-one finds a solution with the number cards in play, deal out another number card.  Players are given time to do their calculations.  Repeat this process until someone finds a solution.

When a player finds their target they call out GOT IT! and present their solution. That target card is retained and set aside as a record of their win.

Example:

Target Card: 84

Number cards: 7, 20, 10, 100 and 20.

Solution: 100 – (7+10)+(20÷20) = 84

Start another game as above.

The game ends when a player has 5 wins. (Collected 5 target cards.)

-------------------------------------------

Variation - introduce the steal

If a player fails to see a solution for their target card and agrees to another number card being dealt, an opponent can call out steal!! as the number card is dealt.   The extra number card is returned to the deck and the thief presents their solution and steals that target to their pile of wins.

Play is then restarted from the beginning.

Continuous

As above until - When a player finds their target they call out GOT IT! and present their solution. That target card is retained and set aside as a record of their win. They are then issued with another target card and play continues.  All other players retain their target cards until they find a solution.

The game ends when a player has 5 wins. (Collected 5 target cards.)

---------------------------------------------

Variation - introduce the steal

As in steal above but as play is continuous, at the thief's discretion, they can pass their own target card to the victim and draw another target card for themselves or allow the victim to draw another target card and keep their own.

Reverse Continuous

Place a target card in the middle.
Deal two number cards to each player.  Players try to reach the same target in the middle using their own number cards.

If no-one finds a solution with the first allocation of number cards, deal out another number card to each player.  Players are given time to do their calculations.  Repeat this process until someone finds a solution.

When a target is reached, the first player to call out GOT IT! presents their solution.

When someone finds a solution they take that target card as a record of their win.

Players retain their number cards.  Another target card, is revealed in the centre and play continues.

The game ends when a player has 5 wins. (Collected 5 target cards.)

Solitaire

number of players - one

Deal yourself 6 cards for Get it White or 8 cards for Get It Gold.

Place the whole deck of target cards in the centre then solve each target card in turn. Try to get through the whole deck of targets using your allocated number cards.

Levelling the playing field

If there is a significant difference between the ability of players, level the playing field by giving the advanced players the gold targets and the other players the white targets.

Adaptation for Early Learners

From the number cards select one each of the numbers 1 to 10.
Deal out one card – this becomes the target.
Deal out 2 more cards and ask the players if they can make the target using these 2 cards.  If not, deal out another card until a solution is possible.  Assist as required.
Example :- target card 5
Number cards 3 and 2
Solution :- 3 +2 = 5
Use the maths processes that match the ability of the players.
As they advance further, add more number cards – 15, 20, 25. Etc.
